Planned C section??

I've seen talk about having scheduled c sections at 36 weeks... I'm confused because I wouldn't dare think of bringing my baby into the world until he or she is finished baking or ready. That is of course if there are no complications that require it but wouldn't that be an emergency circumstance and unplanned? What are some of your opinions?

I pushed for 5 hours with my 1st. Only to have her heart rate drop and then we needed an emergency csection. I watched her be born not breathing and needed to be intubated and spend many weeks in the nicu. So given my 1st birth I was offered a csection at 39 weeks. Forgive me but your post comes off a bit rude, not sure if it’s intended but I would reword it as there are medically necessary csections scheduled.

No doctor will do an elective c section at 36 weeks. A doctor won’t even do an elective induction at 36 weeks. Most doctors wait until 39 weeks, unless a complication arises. I got induced and an emergency c section done at 38 weeks due to hypertension

I had a scheduled csection at 36 weeks with my son and will with this pregnancy as well. Not all csections at 36 weeks are emergency but a doctor will not schedule that early unless it’s medically necessary. I had to have part of my uterus removed prior to having kids so my doctor doesn’t want me to get to the point where I start having contractions as that could potentially rupture my uterus. I can guarantee there is not a doctor out there that would schedule a csection or induction before 39 weeks if it wasn’t medically necessary.

People have planned c sections at 36 weeks for medically necessary reasons that outweigh the benefits of waiting until 39 weeks or later- for the mother and the baby. For example, placenta previa: if you go into natural labor there is a very high risk your baby will bleed out and die; the placenta can’t come out before the baby. Other reasons include moms with gestational diabetes or regular diabetes if their baby is getting too big, premature rupture of membranes that leads to high risk of infection, cholestasis where mom’s liver function is severely compromised, etc. Of course none of these are situations where people just feel like having their baby early, it’s under the advice of doctors and necessary for everyone’s health and safety. And when early csections are scheduled, babies are given steroid shots ahead of the surgery to mature their lungs.

As many women here have said c-sections are only planned that early out of medical necessity. Potential problems with a pregnancy can be identified early and a plan can be made to ensure safety for mom and baby by planning an early c section. I am going in on Monday at 20 weeks for a final decision on if I will need a pre term c section because of my high risk for uterine rupture. No one wants to deliver that early, of course it is safer in normal instances to deliver after 39 weeks but not everyone has that luxury. We’re all out here doing what we can for our children to have the best chance.

I wouldnt call it an emergency. I had my daughter at 27 weeks and that was an emergency, because she was so small I had to get a classical c section where they cut my uterus vertical. Because of this I will always have to have a c section, no exceptions, by 36/37 weeks because of the risk of my uterus tearing due to baby size

I was scheduled for a C section at 37 weeks. At first it was planned at 36 weeks but the pregnancy was going well enough we decided for 37.
To schedule at 36 weeks typically there is an underlying issue. For me it was chance of uterine rupture due to a previous c section. For others it could be various medical factors.
Drs will often give a steriod injection even at 36 weeks to help lung development and typically have been doing NST monitoring to see how the baby is doing for practice breathing. 
A lot goes into a scheduled c section and planning one. Trust other women to make the correct medical choices without judging them.

I need a c-section with this pregnancy and my doctor won't do it before 39 weeks because it's not full term until 39 weeks. She said they used to do 37 weeks at the earliest, but recent studies and such suggest that there's a lot more benefits to having them stay in until at least 39 weeks, as long as there's no medical emergency to get them out earlier.

Sometimes just going into labor could be extremely dangerous for mom, so in those cases c-sections are planned earlier to make sure it takes place before she goes into labor on her own. 
How early that happens will depend on the doctor’s assessment of mom’s risk of preterm labor. If there are no major risk factors they can wait longer, but if mom’s risk factors and medical history suggest there’s a good chance she could go into labor at say 37 weeks, then they will want to schedule a c-section around 36 weeks. But again this is only in cases where going into labor could be very dangerous for mom or baby. 
Each situation is unique and of course they weigh all benefits and risks to make the right decision for the individual.
