Name Debacle: What would you do?

Question

Long story short, my husband and I chose to keep our son’s name a secret until birth. Today, an acquaintance of mine had a baby and named their child while the exact same first name, same spelling and all. Now I’m stuck. We live in a very small town and our kids will most definitely go to school together. Do I keep the name we had chosen, or would you change it?

For me it would really depend on how close you are with this acquaintance. I wouldn't care about the same name in school, unfortunately that can happen. I personally wouldn't want to use the same name if I socially hang out with the person or we have a lot of mutual friends.

I went to school with a girl with the same name as me, for 15 years, same grade and classes. We survived lol. If you like the name, I see no reason to change it.

You’ll always come across kids at school with the same name.  Our rule was ‘if it’s likely the kids will play together because of our relationship with the parents we’d avoid the name.  Basically, only close family and close friends.  Otherwise if you avoided every acquaintance you’ll run out of normal names!

Do these people have the same last name as you? If not it’s not a big deal at all 🤷🏻‍♀️ Unless you are close friends with them and foresee a lot of play dates together.

I have a really common name (its not cherry) and from primary school through to uni there was always at LEAST one girl with my name. In secondary school one year there was 4 of us with the same name in the same class 😂 if you love the name keep it!

I would still name my baby whatever I wanted. I grew up with other Jessicas EVERYWHERE and it was fine.

If you love it then keep it. There's nothing wrong with that at all. I personally would at least LOOK for a different name.
