17 month old keeps grabbing his ear...any ideas?

He’s been doing this off and on for a few months now. We have a doctor appointment this month, but I just wanted to know if anyone else’s child did this and what it was?

My son used to do this a lot, turned out he always had an ear infection coming when he started doing it

My daughter does this when she’s sad, angry or tired. Sometimes just for fun because she loves ears lol and loves saying ears. It could just be that? But if he has a fever, feeling off and seems to be in pain it could be an infection

Could be an ear infection starting, could be teething or he just be grabbing at it. Any other signs (fever, crying in pain, loss of appetite) could point more to the first two. But my son had chronic ear infections until he was 2 or so (at least once a month) and never showed ANY signs until the fevers would spike. A couple times they were so bad that his little eardrum almost burst, but I never knew because he didn't have any symptoms and didn't do the ear tug.

Could be an ear infection if there is other symptoms but it could also just be teething or a self soothing thing.
