I think it's fairly common. About 1/2 of the people I know who started out with twins lost one during the pregnancy.

My daughter was a twin. Her fraternal twin was lost early on

My husband is a product of that happening. His mother was pregnant with twins (fraternal) and miscarried his twin but he was ok.
