What do you think about alimony?
So I’m not sure if this has been discussed on here but I saw this online and it seemed pretty controversial lol. So I think it is different in each state. In my state alimony can only be awarded the same amount of time you have been married at the most. So if you were married for 5 years as an example, the max alimony you can receive would be 5 years after the divorce and so on...
The only exception is if you have been married for 20 years it is possible to get permanent alimony (unless you remarry) if you can prove to the courts on why it is needed. From what I have gathered the amount of alimony just depends on a few different factors. Like the quality of life you lived during marriage, how much each of you made, etc.
Now I do believe it is different in each state so that may not be the same everywhere... but regardless what do you all think about this? Do you think alimony is a good thing? A bad thing? Do you think a spouse should be made to financially support the other ex-spouse after a divorce, or should it not be their responsibility? Does it just depend on the circumstances to you? What are your thoughts? I’m honestly undecided because I could see both points of view.
