Weight and hormones?

D

Has anyone ever had their doctor explain if or how weight and hormones relate? I’m especially curious if weight gain disrupts hormones. When I try to get an answer, I keep finding articles that hormones cause weight gain, which although I believe it, that isn’t my question. I’m more curious is weight gain causes hormonal changes.

Background: I’m 36 and over the past 5 years I went from 135 to 165lbs from plain old unhealthy eating. I’m 5’2” so I was borderline obese at 165. During that gaining period, especially when I went from 150 to 165lbs, I developed mild melasma, some chin hair, and back acne. I went to the dermatologist and she said the melasma was from sun exposure and had nothing to do with hormones, which seems odd since it’s often tied to pregnancies and birth control. Plus, I’m as pale as they come, and wear a minimum of SPF 50 every day! She also didn’t seem concerned about a 36 year old suddenly developing back acne. And we didn’t get to the chin hair in my appointment.

In the past 6 months, I’ve lost weight and now I’m back to 135, and hope to lose another 15-20lbs so I’m solidly in the healthy range. But now I’m wondering if that weight gain before could have disrupted my hormones enough to cause those symptoms, and if my new weight loss will help regulate and correct the symptoms. The back acne is already gone, btw!

I’ve never been on BC and don’t have kids. I plan on going to a GYN after COVID has gotten less dangerous, hopefully to get some tests run. But til I can do that, I’m wondering if others have information on these matters. I’ve also considered PCOS being the cause. Of course I’ll need the test, but I have no other symptoms for that so I’m not sure if that’s a likely culprit.

Sorry for the long post!
