HSG? (Hysterosalpingogram)

Question

Has anyone had an HSG after recurrent M/C’s? Or just in general? I have secondary infertility and have had 6 M/C’s. I’ll be having one my next cycle on days 9-11. 
What was it like?
What did it tell you?

Not gonna sugar coat it. It was the most physically painful thing I’ve ever experienced. I left in like shock bc I didn’t know my body could feel such pain (even tho logically I know childbirth is painful). My therapist had one as well and has two kids and said that she feels as tho it was more painful than child birth BUT!!!!! It lasted probably like 15 seconds. It felt like an eternity but it was quick. There were some students in the room a nurse and the doctor performing it. It was like an X-ray room kinda thing and I went into a tube but my head was out and legs it just went over my abdomen and it wasn’t like small or anything so I wasn’t claustrophobic. I moaned and groaned in pain and told her to stop. No one panicked and they were all just calm looking at the screen so I knew in that moment it was okay and normal but by the time I finally yelled please stop she was already pulling out the catheter and the pain stopped instantly. It was soooo quick. But that’s just my honest experience.. I read some women feel no pain some think it’s just like bad period pain.. I have horrible periods and the pain was very different for me. My tubes were not blocked either. And I did not conceive after getting it done (solely when it came to getting the HSG done) I finally conceived a year later with Clomid and IUI.

I’ve had multiple HSGs done, it’s very easy and simple. It will tell you if you tubes are open or not, and evaluate the shape of your uterus. dye is inserted into the uterus via catheter, they fill a ballon then pop it basically, then the dye should go through tubes clearly and flow out. They take an x-ray while doing this.

I’ve had two of them done, it wasn’t painful just a tad uncomfortable. You will cramp for a little bit afterwards and possible spot. I would take a few pain medications beforehand if you don’t do well with pain.

It’s a really uncomfortable exam. Take 800mg ibuprofen beforehand, like an hour before. Breathe through it and try to relax. For me it was painful but just for a minute and then it was over. Worth it if it gets us our baby!

Mine was not super painful. More so uncomfortable. I spotted for a couple days after. It is mainly to examine the paths are clear for sperm and egg to meet

Some people say its not painful. I call them liars but thats because for me it was so incredibly painful I thought I would pass out. I was screaming and sobbing. I blame part of this on the tech issuing it and blame part on my doctors who didn't warn me or suggest taking pain medication before hand and I have heard some people are giving some numbing meds before which I did not receive. At first one doc thought I had a closed tube, but my other doc confirmed I do not, but the trauma of sending the dye in made my tube contract so the photo only appeared closed. 😒

My close friend had this done a few months ago and said it was extremely painful. She told me it should be my last result of testing bcuz of how bad it was.. i believe she had her tubes cleaned out also.. she did end up with a BFP that next month and is now healthy 18weeks!!

I think it fully depends on one’s pain tolerance, if they have a blockage and how relaxed they are. It was definitely uncomfortable and a little nauseating for me. The doctor didn’t look at my chart (not my normal doctor) before starting. I have a bicornuate uterus and she didn’t realize so she had to do it twice for me. I felt mostly pressure and a small pinch which is never a good feeling in the area, but for me it was not worth the sleepless nights and anxiety that I had. I had no blockages and got pregnant the second cycle after if I remember correctly.

It told me tubes my were open. It hurt like hell but only for a short while. My cervix is curved so the first tech couldn't get past it. I had 3 different attempts. The 3rd time was with my Dr who clamped my cervix and maybe that's why it was so painful. Some people its not painful for.
