I was given one in the hospital because my baby wasn't latching on my right breast. He would do great on the left but we couldn't get our act together when nursing on the right. 
I don't think he got any colostrum out of shield

I would wait and then if you’re in pain which typically occurs in the first 2 weeks then go for it. If you just start off with the sheild the baby may refuse the actual nipple and sheilds are not meant for long term use. My son started out on the boob went to a sheild for a little while and adjusting back to just nipple was a little bit of a process for both of us to get used to. Also your nipples need to tough up. Which is why they say the first two weeks are the worst so if you’re not even giving them a shot in the beginning then you’ll deal with it once you drop the sheild.
