Why are people taking opks to detect pregnancy?

I keep seeing women taking opks to see if they are pregnant. Why are they doing this?? You’re looking for hcg, not LH. What am I missing?

People believe that LH strips can pick up that they are pregnant. I didn’t believe it until it happened to my sister. This was her opk and I told her that’s too positive. I told her to take a pregnancy test and sure enough she was pregnant.

I took one since I didn't have a pregnancy test at the time. It showed positive after I already ovulated which was odd. Took an actual test later that day, and I was in fact pregnant.

I took an opk after a miscarriage because I was confused on where my cycle was at. It ended up being wildly positive so I took an hpt. I was pregnant. My next pregnancy I didn’t have any hpts on hand so I took an opk. Obviously I followed up with an hpt. Opks should never be your final answer.

HCG binds to the protein strip and will turn an OPK positive when pregnant. However, it detects it at the same time (if it’s a cheap test) or later than a pregnancy test so I have no idea why people do it. 
Also, it’s important to know you can have an LH surge before your period. I have had several Positive OPKs just before my period when I first started TTC and wanted to see LH levels throughout my cycle

Because depending on how far along you are it will be positive. I took one at 7 weeks (already knowing I was pregnant obviously) and it was a “blazing positive”. I wouldn’t suggest taking one instead of a pregnancy test but if you’re pregnant and take one it will be positive

I took one when I was like 6 weeks just to see what would happen because so many people say it'll be super dark of you're pregnant. I took it and the control line was barely even there. The test can confuse HCG for LH and it's definitely not to be used on it's own because it isn't testing for HCG, and some people get a positive before they have a period so it all depends.

I’m going to throw it out that I always get positives before my cycle so it isn’t accurate for everyone.
