How can I style my hair like this?

I had my hair trimmed and highlighted a couple days ago. My hair stylist style it this way. She told me to curl it with a curling iron, and run my fingers through my hair to loosen it to this style- kind of a tousled wavy look. 
I’ve tried but just can’t do it, and YouTube videos aren’t that helpful. Help?

Use flat iron like a curling iron.

Instead of just releasing the curl with your curling iron. Kind of unravel it but not releasing the clamp. Kind of glide it downwards gently. Once you are done then run your fingers through it.
