HELP Want to build a guitar for my boyfriend

Hi! I recently bought a bass guitar at a garage sale because ever since I met my boyfriend, I wanted to build/refinish and design a guitar for him. I got this one because it was cheap and I've been reading and watching a lot on how to do it. I also have many questions, number 1 being can you build a bass guitar into an electric guitar? Any advice, tips, guidance, etc would be greatly appreciated!
