Important Questions For POC
I am a white mother and wife. I have a young son (3 years old) and a daughter on the way. My son is beginning to notice differences in skin color. I’ve told him that people come in different colors and have different cultures and it is beautiful and it’s one of the things that makes people who they are. But I don’t know if that is enough or the best way to explain. In my home, we want to teach tolerance and love. We make it known that Black Lives Matter and we acknowledge our white privilege. These recent events have made us reflect even more on that and we want to be absolutely sure we are doing the best we can to be a part of the solution, not the problem as white people. We stand with our beloved POC. We want to get this right. Can you please help me be the best parent I can be and answer the following questions?
1) How should I best explain the differences in color of skin and culture to a young child in a way that emanates love and acceptance?
2) If my young child were to see you in public and say “the lady with the dark skin” or “the brown man with the red shirt”, what is the best way I can address that situation? I would feel absolutely horrible if it made someone feel any negative emotion and I want to be able to correct my child appropriately.
Thank you for reading. We stand with you always. ❤️
