Speaking in a different language in public

MK

I just saw an article about a woman harassing a group of asian women for not talking in english in public, this happened in an english speaking country, there was also another incident in another english speaking country where a woman screamed at a man (it doesn't mention where he's from) in a subway for talking on his phone in a different language.

The first one the group of women were talking to each other and they speak english but preferred to speak in their own language together, same with the man who was talking on his phone.

I saw so many people supporting this and other who were against it, so i thought i should ask you ladies here, what do you think?

Do you think immigrants or expats should speak in the language of the country they live in when they are in public? Doesn't have to be English, it could be French speaking country, Arabic speaking country or any other country.

I personally speak two languages and understand another ( i only understand it but can't really speak it) ,and I'm also an immigrant and when I'm with my friends (who speak both) i usually speak a mix of my language and the language of the country i live in, or if i need more privacy when I'm talking to a friend or my husband in public i stick only to my language.

So what do you think? Do you feel uncomfortable or threatened in a way if you walk past a person or stand next to people in public not being able to understand what they're saying?

*** i get that the majority of people here are American, but I'm not referring to a specific country, also those incidents didn't happen in America ** I'm talking in general.
