Should a person who murders a police officer receive a different types of sentence then a person who murders an average civilian?

Va

Assume the following:

-The cop was in uniform or the murderer knew they were an on-duty police officer

-The actions of the crime are the same,.. say they walked up to the cop or average person on the street and shot them unprovoked.

-The race of the murderer or the victims is not relevant to the case.

Context: I was talking with a friend about charges and how everyone has an opinion on what the correct sentence is for George Floyd’s murder as well as other crimes happening and how the the public might be demanding sentences that would not be typically for the charges, etc...

I said, “when someone kills a cop there is a higher penalty”.. which she was not aware of and said the charge should be the same no matter who is killed. I disagreed and said because police are intended to protect the public it is a crime on the community to murder a police officer and should have a higher charge.. I also thought that when a police officer abuses their power they should be charged with a higher sentence because they not only committed a crime but they breeched the trust of the public... she agreed with me that police should have harsher sentences because of abuse of power, but said murdering them is the same as any other person. We agreed to disagree, but I am curious what you think?
