Does anyone know what could be going on with this rock?

Hello I found this down by a beach along Lake Michigan. Does anyone know what would explain it looking like this??? Thank you!

This is in fact a fossil! “This entire area was covered by a shallow salt water sea, known as the Silurian Sea. Animals of this time period are the Lake Michigan fossils we find today.
The Silurian Sea was teeming with swimming and flowing life such as Crinoids, Cephalopods, Brachiopods and various corals. I wanted to call it a petoskey stone but I don't think that is correct. It looks like some kind of fossilized something.
