This is going to be a bit of a personal rant. I’m not gonna mention any names or anything I just wanna get it off my chest.

I’ve been friends with this girl for over a year. We’d spend every day together when we went to high school. We haven’t been able to hang out much since we don’t go to the same colleges.

Despite that we text almost everyday and she’s very active on social media. I’m not as active on social media but I like to look at it. Lately she has been posting a lot about black lives matter and George Floyd for a week as well as talking to me about it. Which is not a problem. If you choose to use your platform to speak out on social injustices and matters that you think are important than more power to you.

I wouldn’t have a problem with her posting if she wasn’t still talking to a kid who would call me kike (an offensive word to call jews) and say things at the expense of me and my family being Jewish. As well as basically saying my family members who were killed in the holocaust deserved it.

Despite that she’s been very vocal about this situation, which I’d like to reiterate is not a problem. Instead it is the fact that it is popular right now to be talking about this but when I was in highschool I was consistently faced with anti Semitism and hatred almost every day and she didn’t care that I was hurting or back me up whenever I was telling the boy what he was saying was ignorant. She only shows that she cares about a situation when she can hide behind a screen and not directly faced by the backlash.

I’m white, I’m not claiming to understand what it is like to be a person of color or to have those struggles. But when this boy heard that I was jewish he would call me slurs and say anti Semitic things and people went along with it and would not say anything because it’s edgy and cool. Even though I would tell people, specifically her, that it bothered me.

I continue to talk to her but her hypocrisy is hurtful to me. I firmly believe that if someone cares about activism as she claims she does and did when we were in high school then she wouldn’t just post or defend issues when it’s the hot topic at that time.
