You have to be effaced before you can dilate. I was 3cm and 70% effaced when labor started

With my 3rd baby I was checked at 36 weeks. I was 95% effaced, 4 cm dilated and his head was at a 0 station. I wasn't having contractions and my hospital considers 5cm active labor so I wasnt admitted. I was eventually induced at 40+5. So i went almost 5 weeks like that. Nothing means anything until you're in actual active labor.
