Baby proofing

Question

What do I need to baby proof? What items did you love? Also, specific question, do you put a gate at top and bottom of stairs? 🤦 First time mom. Thank you!

Stove covers like this are nice if you have a stove that works with these. They didn’t work on our Thermador, but they worked on my mom’s stove. We had a gate at the bottom of our stairs, but not the top because my sister said her kids used to climb over the top gate and hurt themselves down the stairs, so we skipped it. Outlet covers are good to have, doorknob covers are nice for toddlers, and put all of your knives, dish pods, and any toxic soap/pill bottles out of reach. We didn’t have anything on our cabinets and our son eventually grew out of opening every door. One thing we did was install deadbolts at the top of our doors going outside, especially the front door. They’re practically all the way to the ceiling so there’s no way our son can reach them.

We have a baby gate at the top of the stairs and that’s pretty much it. I’d like to have one at the bottom but we haven’t found anything that fits at the bottom of ours and still allows our cats and 3yo to go free. Beyond the gate I don’t do any baby proofing, we just teach our babies what they can and can’t play with. It’s worked for us so far.

We actually did minimal baby proofing after we moved with 3 kids, because we found that a majority of it, we really didn't need. And you don't need it until they are mobile. 
Regarding the stairs gate, we have one up and down, but honestly we really don't use it. Our youngest is 2 and still in a crib,  so she's not wandering upstairs unsupervised, and the others are in twin beds but can open the gate anyway. 
The main thing that is often overlooked is anchoring the dresser. There are too many stories of kids playing the dresser drawers and the whole thing falls. 
We also alarm the house because my 2 and 4 year old know how to unlock the front door. 
We didn't do cabinets because we have a very open floor plan so we can see if they're going through the cabinets. They're pretty good about not doing it again once we told them no.

I baby proof anything that has chemicals in it (kitchen sink cabinet and sink under the bathroom). Wall outlets, anything with glass or sharp objects in it. Also corners that are sharp, and door nobs. As for the gate, if I'm downstairs with her the bottom of the stairs is closed off. If I'm upstairs the top of the stairs is closed off (I don't give her access what so ever)

Those electric outlet plugs are pretty worthless. My son figured out how to pull them out ridiculously fast. 🤷‍♀️ gates go at stairs anywhere child will be .. i gated the bottom of the stairs and gated his bedroom at the top of the stairs. That way i knew he was safe if he got up before me, his bedroom was obviously baby proof.

We used something similar to this to lock cabinets. We use this for chemical and the cabinet with our food processor :) this and anchoring furniture was most of what we did. Our house is pretty kid proof (we moved cables/wires, put toys on the bottoms of shelves,etc.)
