When did you let your boss know you were pregnant?

I am a manager at a retail store. My job is stocking, building, and unloading trucks. I’m terrified to do any of that stuff right now without being really careful and not lifting anything. I just want to be as careful as possible this early in my pregnancy! According to glow, I’m 4 weeks today. I have a phone appointment with an obgyn nurse Wednesday. And than will make my prenatal visit from there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. ♥️🙏🏼

Anything you were doing consistently before getting pregnant is usually okay to continue. Obviously work at a slower pace maybe, or listen to your body when you get tired, but since you were doing it before getting pregnant you should be okay to continue. Obviously too, if something is like SUPER heavy don’t lift it alone.

I told them after my first trimester. I had an appointment right at the end and told them after that. Maybe 14 or 15 weeks. But I also work in an office, where I sit down all day, so nothing strenuous

I had hyperemesis from 5 weeks on, so she knew immediately because i had to fill out FMLA paperwork by week 7 because how often i couldnt come to work

With your whole job being heavy lifting it’s good that you told your manager already and hopefully they can make adjustments for you or train you in a different area or the business, who knows you might even love it ☺️ I told my boss after we did the 12 week scan but my company had been shut for lockdown since March, I would have told him much sooner if we were at work as he could make adjustments for me as early on as possible. There’s also friends at work I wanted to tell but I told my boss first as he is the one that has to do the paperwork so didn’t want him hearing through anyone else. I told them at 12 weeks just because I was still very very sick and couldn’t do a lot of lifting and then I only just handed my maternity leave application in I’m 28 +4 now. I would’ve have told them so early if I wasn’t sick

It ended up being right away with COVID because she wanted me to work in an enclosed space with 5 other people without masks and then hand out lunches to people who drove up. I asked to be put somewhere else or given something that didn’t include others. She just said don’t worry about it, to stay healthy and then I  was asked to come in and help with some paperwork when she needed it. It worked out. I told her between 5&6 w and just told her it wasn’t public knowledge and took a chance she might slip. She said she may have told her son “because he works with your husband lol” but I don’t think she did because he sold my husband a bow and our friend facilitated the sale asked for a discount because “the guy is having a baby but I can’t tell you who it’s for” and when we finally announced and he told him he was like “damn why did you just tell me it was for him no baby excuse necessary lol”

If your scared, speak up and ask for modified duty. Pregnancy is a protected class and you shouldn’t cause yourself stress because you fear informing your boss. Also, the risk of miscarriage is highest in the first trimester so if you want to take it easy, then you should 😊
