How do I go about switching to a new doctor?

I made a post in here a little bit ago about my fertility specialist. How would I switched to a new one? Do I need to get a referral from my primary Dr? I'll have an appointment with her in September. 
How would I cancel with my current specialist? 
I have never had to switch doctors before. I did find 2 that I might want to consider.

Do you have HMO or PPO? HMO you can either have your OB or PCP give you a referral to the doctor within your network. If you have PPO, just make an appointment with your chosen doctor, make sure they accept your insurance and cancel your current appointment.

This depends on your insurance - HMO’s typically won’t cover a specialist if it hasn’t gone through their referral process, which can be complicated.  PPO’s typically will, but you need to make sure they are in-network.  Your best bet is to call the insurance company and ask what the process is for your specific plan.

You contact the doctor you want and try to set up an appointment.  Take your records with you and explain the situation.  They will get everything from the previous doctor if they take you as a new patient.

In my experience, I’ve made the appointment with the new place and then had my old place fax over all my records. You might have to go in to sign something that gives them consent to do that. But it shouldn’t be too complicated.
