Staying together for the kids is a bullshit excuse. The children ALWAYS suffer when you stay together for “them.” 9/10 times they’re not staying together for the kids, they use that as an excuse to justify staying in an unhealthy relationship. 
Children can sense when things aren’t right. Children pick up on your energy. Even IF you manage to not fight around the kids, they feel the tension between you. Children pick up on a lot more than you’d think. You may thinking you’re hiding it, but you’re not.
Not to mention you’re teaching children to stay in unhealthy relationships. You’re setting a bad example for your children.

I don’t think that’s ever a good idea. I grew up in a household like that. Your kids deserve to see examples of new good relationships, or strong independent individual parents. Staying in a bad relationship also demonstrates not valuing your own happiness/health/safety.

My parents used my siblings and I as an excuse to stay married and I had been trying to gain the courage to tell them they should divorce since I was 8. They’re divorced and much happier now.

My dad and stepmom stayed together for the kids. It was really bad at first and they were always fighting and screaming at each other in the house in front of us and it made us really sad. But its been about eight months now and they don’t fight much any more. You just have to know your family. Time is the best healer. And then my birth mom and her wife (yes, wife) stayed together for me and my brother after my mom cheated and they went to marriage counseling and it’s been about two years and they’ve never been happier. It’s true that kids pick up on things. I picked up on my mom cheating before they told me. And I could tell that my dad and stepmom were unhappy all the time. You can’t hide things from your kids, we find stuff out

Staying together for the kids is almost never better than just divorcing. It's better to have 2 happy parents who are separated than 2 miserable parents who are together.
