New job - when to tell them I’m pregnant?

I start a new job in about a week and I’m 17 weeks pregnant. I didn’t tell them in the interview because I was worried they wouldn’t hire me. 
I’ll have to take time off to go to some of my appointments and stuff and I’m wondering when I should tell my boss that I’m pregnant. I just don’t know because it’s a new job. Help!

Lots to cover on this. Message me if you need to. I have worked in HR and Payroll. Some things are federally protected but not all. First, does this company employ 50 or more people? This is very important because they are not required to hold your job if they do not. Second, do they have short term disability? You will not qualify for fmla unless you have a start date where you will have been there a year by delivery. If you are in the US and it has not been a year, they are not required to keep your job when you deliver. With Short term disability they cannot terminate you unless your disability is transferred to long term disability. Then they can release u from work but pay you through the end of your disability.

I kept the fact that I’m a breastfeeding/pumping mom a secret for similar reasons when I interviewed for my new job in March. I told them a few days before I started that I’m a breastfeeding mom and I’ll need a pumping room and they have to accommodate my needs by law. And I’m not pumping in a bathroom lol which is also protected by law. I would tell them a week before your first appointment. That way they can shift around any job responsible while you’re gone at your appointment and they’re not blindsided the day of. 🙂 Hope this helps!

Read your handbook! Depending on where you’re at, you might not have to tell them until you can’t hind it or want to tell them. As for appointments, can you schedule them on your lunch break or when you’re not working? This might be able to prolong you having to tell them. Also, I as long as you tell them you have a doctors appointment, they can’t have repercussions and you’re legally protected (however this might be unpaid time depending on their handbook and time allocations for a period of time).
