Ask yourself what type of sex you want to have and why. What are your expectations of it?
For example, if you want quick, one-night stand sex because you just want to get off and you’ve got someone who is also wanting that type of sex with you, then obviously if you’re comfortable with it then go for it! Are you wanting to wait because you want to him to perceive you a certain way (like you’re worried he might think you have sex with partners too easily/quickly if you do it now)?
Are you waiting because you’re not comfortable having sex yet?
Are you waiting because he would be your first sexual partner?
Are you waiting because you want it to feel special as a reflection of a more established emotional bond between you?
Are you waiting because you want to make sure the relationship lasts before having sex? You want stability?
Are you waiting because you want to make sure your partner values you appropriately and isn’t just in it for the chance to have sex on the regular?
Are you waiting because you feel like your peers are waiting too or because of a social expectation to wait?
Are you waiting because you have certain other considerations that can affect one’s comfort level with a new partner, such as being asexual/demisexual, transgender/genderfluid or intersex, sex repulsed, a trauma survivor with sexual intimacy as a trigger, or have medical conditions like physical disability constraining sexual activity?
There are so many reasons one might wonder when the right time is for them. The point is, to answer your own question you need to understand why you’re asking it in the first place. Then ask yourself how you feel about THAT topic and what you actually want to achieve. Then it should become more clear to you when having sex is right for you.
Ultimately it is about your comfort level, not just with sex but with your partner and the type of relationship between you. The main thing is understanding your expectations of sex and waiting or not waiting, and whether that actually fits your circumstances in a way that honors your wants and needs (and your partner’s!) Communicate with your partner to understand their expectations of sex as well and what waiting or not waiting would mean to them and get a chance to share your side.
