Can I have a dog?

Question

Ok so me, my boyfriend, and his friend are all about to move in a townhouse. Our backyard is really small and my boyfriend and his friend both wants dogs. They want a Great Dane and a German Shepard. I feel that it is unfair to get a dog because we don’t have enough space. 
The townhouse that we are moving into is in the middle of all the houses, so our backyard is really small.
What do you think?
I think we should wait until a year or 2 when we buy a bigger house. Then we would have a bigger backyard for the dogs to run around in.
Idk how to explain this to them because they are so focused on getting a dog rather then looking at what the dogs really needs.
They said it’s fine if it’s a small backyard as long as if we have a backyard. But I don’t think that would be fair to the dog.

Definitely not! Especially those breeds. A Great Dane is very large and needs a lot of space and a German Shepard is very active and also needs a lot of space. It wouldn’t be as bad if you got a smaller dog but I agree if they want one of those breeds (or any larger dog in general) they should wait till they have the space. Puppies especially need the room or they will drive you mad! They may not be very big but they have a lot of energy and again need the space to run. We have a rather large backyard and i don’t think that’s even enough for our dogs (1 of which is a husky)

It isn’t really fair but a Great Dane is a better choice in this situation.  They are pretty calm and lazy, honestly.  That breed is known for being fairly adaptable to their surroundings.  A German Shepherd is a terrible option in that situation.  They have a lot of energy that needs to be released all of the time.  If not having enough space and stimulation, the German Shepard will most likely develop anxiety(they are already prone to this) and destroy the house, property, doors, shoes, couches, etc...really everything.  So unless your BF and his friend are up for the task of taking that dog for walks multiple times a day for hours at a time, then it’s a terrible idea.

I have a German Shepherd and lived in apartments and a townhome in the past.  It depends on the dog’s personality but my dog did just fine. If the dog is high energy it will need to go on long walks everyday. My dog was lower energy so I didn’t have to deal with that at all.  I kennel trained him until he was about six months so he couldn’t get into stuff while I was not at home during that puppy stage.  I don’t think more than one dog in a small place is fair to the pets, but one large dog is certainly fine 👌

I wouldn’t suggest a large dog theyre more prone to health issues especially with limited exercise. I would get a dog that’s less active and German Shepard’s are especially a dog you don’t want in a small townhouse they need a job they aren’t police dogs for no reason

Yes in the since that you need to walk it everyday two times a day for like 15-30 min a day.

You can, but you better be prepared to go on long walks multiple times a day, and hit the dog park at least every other day. My 16 lb dog was the perfect size for our yard-less townhouse. But our neighbor has an akita that him and his girl alternate taking on 2 6-mile walks a day, plus they take him to the dog park everyday.

I’d say no. Are you renting or buying the townhouse? If you rent, a lot of places won’t let you have a large breed dog.

You could get away with having small dogs because (not high energy small dogs like foxies and Jack Russells) but definitely not big dogs, even if you commit to walking them two/ three times a day.

not unless one of you has time to sit at the dog park all day everyday to let them exercise. they should either get a pet that can actually thrive in a small space, or wait. it's irresponsible and quite frankly, stupid, for them to completely overlook what would actually be in the dogs' best interests if they want to be responsible for animals.

I agree that’s not enough room for those breeds. If they must have a dog they should think mine, toy or tea cup. Maybe a dachshund 🤷‍♀️ but they probably have no interest in these breeds😁😂
