He flaked on my birthday.

Okay so I’ve been dating my boyfriend for 8 months and things have been great. My daughter’s dad and I had a terrible relationship, so this one has been very easy in the grand scheme.

Well my birthday is next month. I have spent the last 5 birthdays in tears or not able to go out because of my ex. So I had high hopes for this one and my boyfriend knows it. He made a huge deal to me about requesting it off from work and he knew how important these things are to me.

So he just told me that he has my birthday WEEK off from work and is actually gonna go hiking with a buddy and will be gone over my birthday. He didn’t say sorry, didn’t ask about my feelings... nothing like that. Just kinda told me what was up. I told him I understood and I didn’t want him to miss going and that we could celebrate before. He instantly changed the subject. I’m probably projecting my past onto it but I had such high hopes to finally have a good birthday and not spend it crying and feeling unworthy.

I was hurt at first, then calmed down, but now I’m upset again. Should I be upset? Is this a big deal?
