Opposite Sex Hand-Me-Down Infant Clothing: Yay or Nay?

Question

I’ve been blessed to receive lots of hand-me-down infant clothing from family members who have had both girls and boys (we know the gender we’re having), and became curious about how people generally feel about girls wearing traditionally “boyish” clothes and boys wearing traditionally “girly” clothes.

I’m not a fan of the pink bomb of clothes that people set off off when our daughter was born, so I’m using anything from our son that I can get away with using simply so she can wear something that isn’t a shade of pink.

I mean I won’t put my little boys in tutus, and bright pink onesies (unless they ask for it)... If it looks gender neutral ish, I’m all for it. My one pet peeve is when people mistake my kids for girls lmao.

Honestly if I had a flowery sleeper/onesie and all I was doing was sitting at home I’d put my boy in it. Probably not a tutu or a skirt but I personally probably wouldn’t put my girl in a  tutu either when they’re so young lol it is just extra and in the way. If it’s just because it’s pink or purple I wouldn’t go out of my way to put him on it but if it’s what I had on hand and it was the size I needed I don’t see an issue. He’s not going to know the difference. I’m not going to take a ton of pictures and show it off like “omg look what I’m doing” but if I’m just hanging out... free clothes are free clothes!

Hey clothes are clothes! And babies spit up or shit on everything regardless 😊 and if hand me downs are saving your bank account use them! I think it’s silly not to use good clothing just because of the color 😘💕

I was most curious about why people seem to feel more comfortable putting girls in “boyish” clothes (like dinosaurs, trucks, or sports) but would hesitate to put a boy in pink and flowery things and leave the house. 
Have read on other websites’ message boards that people think dressing a boy like a girl would somehow be degrading, but not so much vice versa. Which- if it’s degrading for a boy to wear flowers and ruffles, why isn’t it degrading to put girls in those things?? It’s not like the babies know what they’re wearing, and I don’t believe being mistaken for a girl in infancy is degrading.
We received a lot of flowers-and-hearts hand me downs for our little boy, and I can’t justify letting them go to waste. If people think my boy is a girl, I’ll be more than happy to nonchalantly correct them!

I mean, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks - it all depends on your own personal preference. I’m happy to receive clothes from friends and family members. I have boy/girl twins and I have always dressed them in different clothes - they’ve never shared anything and are always dressed very much like a boy & girl. I think if I had just one I might have dressed him/her in more unisex clothes.

We received way too much pink with my girls, but we also received some really nice gender neutral things that we will be using for little man. We put the girls in "boyish" clothes but they were all really gender neutral. Since when are dinosaurs only for boys and horses only for girls? Ugh! 🙄

My oldest is a boy and I just had a girl. I saved most onesies from my boy since we mainly wear those in the house anyway. The only ones I didn’t keep were ones that said thing like “handsome.” I also got just a few girly onesies and rompers for her to wear out of the house.

If it’s gender neutral why not? I had my baby in January and spent so much money on clothes that he didn’t even get to wear. They grow out of it so quickly
