Do you have to be on welfare to get Medicaid?

My mom told me that you need to be on welfare to get health benefits from Medicaid. One of my friends said she had it after I told her that my job doesn’t have health care/dental. As a teacher assistant I make $15 an hour and it would be nice to be able to go to the dentist if needed or go to the doctor without giving away my entire paycheck. Is this welfare because that’s not what I’m after only heath benefits.

No we qualify for Medicaid for our daughter but not for ourselves and that’s the only state assistance we receive. My husband gets GI bill money and disability from the army, plus his regular job. They don’t count the GI bill or VA money and at his regular job he only makes 11 dollars an hour. We didn’t qualify even with that little but it was low enough for us to get my daughter Medicaid which is what mattered most to us. In most states you’d be making too much to qualify but never hurts to apply, they’ll just say no. For children to get health insurance the income limit is quite high but for adults the limit is very low in Texas you’d basically have to be making minimum wage at a part time job to qualify.

You don't need to have other welfare benefits like food stamps to receive Medicaid. No hurt in applying but make sure you don't make more than your states minimum or you won't qualify. In my state even if you make $9 but work full time you will not qualify for state insurance/medicaid. I'd apply regardless because worse case they say no

Don’t be ashamed of government assistance, it’s there for a reason. You have a respectable job but it doesn’t pay well. Take the insurance and don’t be shy about helping put food on the table. One less expense as you build your bank account.

Maybe it depends on where you live. But I have never been on welfare. And I have pregnancy Medicaid. Both of my boys have Medicaid. I know plenty of people on medicaid and not welfare. Just apply and see what happens
