Did I say something wrong?

Hey ladies I need honest answers. My boyfriend (we have only been together 4 months) has this friend who wears really nice smelling cologne. The other night my boyfriend had a few friends over to watch the game. When his friend walked in I complimented his cologne and told him it smelled great. He said “oh thanks this fragrance is called ____” and I said “that was good pick. It smells really fresh” and that was it. My boyfriend told me once everyone left that I was out of line.......... I don’t understand how I was out of line for complimenting someone’s fragrance! I’m assuming he’s probably feeling some type of way because I don’t tell him he smells good (he doesn’t wear cologne). I’m also a fragrance freak myself and love smelling good! I compliment men and women all the time on their fragrances. Complete strangers even! I never thought of it as being offensive to my partner tho.... did he have a reason to be upset?
