Cereal?

Just had our four-month doctor visit today. The doctor said I can start cereal mixed with breast but I do not want to give cereal at all and just wait until six months to start baby led weaning. Do I have to give cereal or purées? The way the doctor was talking made it seem like it was necessary

Nope not at all! You can just wait to do BLW. We, however, are doing a mixture of both. We’ve started to play around with oatmeal mixed with breastmilk but mainly for “fun”. There are mixed studies on the pros vs cons of starting at 4 months. I’m still going to do BLW but are doing a few purées here and there before, as through my research I think the pros outweighs the cons.

My doctor told me I could do this as well. But it's really up to you. It's definitely not necessary. Mostly what I read is When baby starts showing interest in your food, following the spoon from your plate to your mouth with his mouth open and eyes wide, that's when you start giving him taste of his own food if you want

yeah mine is 4 months and he started to show interest in foods so we're are giving him purées. if they show interest, i think it's a great idea to start weaning them while breastfeeding. there's no harm in doing it

You don’t have to give cereals but you can. Mine said I can give rice cereal but not to overdo it, regular oatmeal and purée versus buying baby oatmeal. I’ll probably start by smashing avocado and seeing if he likes it in a few weeks (and if his tongue thrust is gone). I may also try putting a small amount of peanut butter in breast milk as a “milkshake” and give him a spoonful for an early introduction.

We only did cereals with my son for early exposure to gluten (wheat and barley), but they aren't necessary

I have no advice but just want to say i had no idea this was a thing! I also have a 4 month old and i exclusively breastfeed and now I think this is the route I want to go with my baby! Of course I will read more about it... but is it called weaning because it helps the baby wean?
