Talk of OB and Endocrine
I’m being induced here in a few days but I wanted to share my story.
This is my third pregnancy but first with GD. I failed my one hour by 2 points, then went on to fail my 3 hour.
I started keeping track of my sugars and could control them very well throughout the day by diet alone! The only thing I couldn’t do is get my fasting down (I only ran slightly high at 103-106). I was then put on Levemir pen insulin at only night time.
I took my first dose and it went well! It didn’t hurt at all injecting it!
I also received my iron infusion the same day.
9 hours after taking my first dose of insulin and 12 hours after my infusion, I had an allergic reaction. I broke out in hives EVERYWHERE. We were able to bring them down with benedryl and stop my contractions with fluids. I went home and everything was normal.
They brought me in the next night to watch me while I took my next dose of insulin as they weren’t sure if I was allergic to that or the iron infusion. All was well and I went home the next day yet again.
I was able to finish the pen without problems and it was determined to be the iron infusion that I was allergic to.
Last week I started a new levemir pen and had no second thoughts. Well, 6 hours later I had my second allergic reaction. This time it crept into my throat. My husband called the ambulance and i was once again in the hospital. Benedryl calmed it down once again but my contractions wouldn’t stop. Luckily I wasn’t progressing so I was sent home and instructed to stop the insulin and rest.
I’ve talked to two different endocrinologist with 20+ years of experience each and neither have come across a case like mine. They have no idea still what caused my allergic reaction nor why it’s only from the first dose of a new pen. Every new nurse or other I talk to when I bring up my history goes “oh my gosh! I heard of this happening recently here!”
It’s been weird being an outlier honestly, and I can’t WAIT for this to all be over lol
Also I haven’t had a drop of insulin since this and my fasting have been amazing! Below 95 almost every morning! And if it’s not it’s only been 96 or 97!
