Why are people so mean

Question

So I am dating a guy that I went to high school with, he is in the navy and we haven't seen each other in 4 years. 
But I posted on another group on here for military girlfriends and they were all kinds really mean. Just telling me I am a pen pal and nothing more. That you cant be anything more. 
But, long distance relationships are a thing? Like why is everyone I know, and people I dont know being so mean about it? We are both grown adults and have made a decision to be together even tho we dont live together. 
We have video chatted every night since we got close, we have boundries set up, and we know exactly what the other person expects out of the relationship. 
The only difference with our relationship is he is in the navy. But apparently I am dumb and stupid and nothing because we haven't seen each other in 4 years. We get to spend 2 weeks together in November. 
My family thinks I am dumb, no one seems to support me in anyway. What's so wrong with my relationship? 
Why do LDR seem to get shit on a lot? If you're committed and loyal its nothing other than space between you. Idk. Sorry

I dont think its the long distance part. I think its the fact that you hvent seen wachother in 4 years and started a relationship. Although it can be done..... its usually unlikely. Alot of military guys, even in relationships that were established in person cheat and dont work out. Just sounds like the odds are stacked against you. And tbh you need to be able to truly see his character, integrity, habits and make sure he is genuine before commiting and investing in my opinion.
    Me and hubs did long distance for four years. Sometimes he lived in different states. But for awhile he only lived 1hr45mins away so i would drive and spend a few days every week. We got married last year. I think it really just depends on the quality if the man u are dealing with. I would say its unlikely most guys can and are faithful but there are a few. You just need to do your due diligence to make sure he is being genuine and committed while u wait to establish a union.

People shit on anything they don’t understand because they’ve never experienced it, or if they experienced it different than you it’s wrong. I’ve been with my fiancé for 4 1/2 years 854 miles from each other, we see each other twice a year but this year it was only once and that’s when we got engaged. we went a year and a half once without seeing each other because of finances and other life shit getting in the way. Don’t let people get you down, I’ve encountered plenty of people who don’t get it and they laugh about it but it’s not their life. I’m happier in this LDR than I ever was with my piece of shit ex husband.

not everyone has the means to travel , and that's perfectly fine. just save up for a time where you two can finally meet. it doesn't make your relationship any less valid, some people just hold on tightly to catty behaviour and allow transference when it doesn't even involve them. if we weren't able to afford it, my bf and i probably wouldn't see each other for ~3 years since i plan on going to law school in the east coast while he gets his phd elsewhere. every circumstance is different. as long as you're both committed, it's a relationship. i wouldn't pay much mind to people who go out of their way to put others down.
