When did you start time out?

My son is 15 months and I'm starting to tell him no quite a bit. I'm wondering if I should be also doing a short time out to reinforce the no? First time mom so I'm not sure!

Timeouts are frustrating for both child and parent. And while sometimes children need to leave a situation to cool down timeouts are often not appropriate and create a power struggle where the parent is trying to force a child to sit for a period of time (even though it’s not developmentally appropriate)
Redirection offers logical consequences to a child’s actions.
Acknowledges a child’s feelings,
Offers choices 
And does not escalate the problem.

My son is 21 months old and we only do “timeouts” which really consists of him crying in his crib if he’s really bad or throwing a fit

They don’t recommend timeouts because kids can’t separate the action from the feeling especially when they’re young. So if you send them into timeout they can develop feelings that feeling angry or sad is bad, not necessarily that the toy they threw or whatever their action taken was bad. I really feel like it’s helped me with my 2 year old and her tantrums have lessened and shortened since I started following their recommendations

I would suggest redirection. In addition to that, I would suggest praising him for all the positive behaviors he exhibits. This will breed more positive behaviors. Time out isn’t the most effective way to discipline in general, and I don’t consider it age appropriate for a 15 month old. 
Use the tone of your voice to convey a firmness, rather than simply always saying “no”.

My baby is 2 and she wouldn’t even begin to grasp what “time out” is. I second redirection. Punishments only work if your kid understands why.

We just did our 1st time out at 16 months. I’m a teacher and have good patience here, but after 15+ times of redirection from her hitting me, Yes I used time out. She sat where she could see us and we ignored her for 1 minute and she cried. Then we got up and said okay, let play now that we’ve collected ourself. The hitting stopped for a few hours. Then we had to do it again. 
Mama will not be hit - or her Papa. She tried to hit him too. That’s a big no no to us.

I have a very ornery 14mo, I say no or ask him to do something different. I.e. cocking back to hit, I’ll grab his hands and say gentle hands and show him gentle. Or I.e. climbing on brother been brother definitely doesn’t want him to, I’ll take him toa different room to play with something else, he usually flops on the floor and screams and I just say I understand I get frustrated too, even though I know he doesn’t understand yet lol. Totally getting into things he’s not supposed to, I’ll pull out a sensory bin to help him have something exciting that is safe for him to explore and it the disgusting toilet or whatever he’s trying to get into lol. The Montessori school I took my older son to would do a time out with a sensory bin and she had a lot of success using that.

Just be consistent with telling him no. It can take literally up to fifty times at that age for it to register. I wouldn’t waste time or effort with timeouts that young personally. Just keep consistent and redirect when necessary. He will get it.

I have done time outs with all my children my oldest 18yr and youngest 20 months and I usually start introducing it at 18 months. 
What I do is take the toys away or whatever they may be doing at the time and tell them that its relax time and sit them down on chair, couch etc. For one minute and if they struggle I sit next to them quietly and tell them it's time to calm down and no playing it take time but it becomes affective you have to be patient and change it up with time added as they get older.
