Doctor or midwife?

Question

I found out I am 5 weeks pregnant and have been trying to get myself a midwife. I live in Alberta, Canada and midwives here are very limited. Most of them rejected because they are full (seriously) I’m really sad. I applied so so many and never heard back.......
I’m scared that doctors won’t give the care as much as the midwives do. Any thoughts?

I had OBs for my first, midwifes for my second. Honestly I loved the midwives, but working with an OB was not a bad experience at all.

I've had both- a midwife with my first and a doctor with my second. I found having a midwife was more soothing being a ftm since they were very thorough and explained everything and encouraged any questions. They even gave me a binder with all my appointment info in it for me to look at and bring in each time. I was okay with having a doctor for my second (the closest midwives were over an hour away) because I was more comfortable being pregnant. My doctors (I had a rotation of 3 just like my modwives) were all very kind and the guys especially were very friendly, but the appointments were much more brief. All in all, I'm happy with how both pregnancies were handled.

That seems crazy that they are all already booked up when you are only 5 weeks! If you haven't heard back I would honestly try them again. I found having a midwife was such an awesome experience, it allowed me to have a waterbirth which I couldn't have otherwise. I really hope you're able to find one with an opening girl! ☮💕

I had great experiences with both. I had a dr with my first in alberta and a midwife with my second in bc. Midwife definitely took my wants more seriously but the dr I had was pretty caring too. I guess it would depend what kind of birth you want (medicated, unmedicated,  hospital, homebirth) and go from there

It’s crazy how fast the midwives book up. I literally emailed them the day after I got my positive! I am also in Alberta. Can you ask to be put on a waiting list? Sometimes people drop care. Try to get in with a good OB if you can :) Many women survived without midwives so try not to worry!
