What does a contraction feel like?

I’m 39 weeks and I haven’t been feeling any type of pain yet. But today I felt a sharp period like pain in my lower belly. Can that be a contraction?

I will say that you will know when it’s time. 
I knew it was time cuz my water broke everywhere. But when my contractions started I was pretty confused by the way they felt initially. It was like a massive period cramp but deep in my vagina. It was like a “wave” across my stomach/uterus like described in my birth class till my contractions got stronger and closer together. So I’m not sure if I would have initially thought those were contractions had my water not broken but it was pretty obvious within an hour of them starting that they were actually contractions.

I used to ask this and ppl would tell me “you’ll definitely know” i used to get so annoyed but they were absolutely correct! I had one a couple days before i actually went into labor and i was stuck and couldn’t move from where i was standing. It felt like a sharp pain around my whole abdomen and days later i felt the same thing only they never stopped lol

If it’s happening constantly then it could be but it could also be Braxton Hicks, maybe even something else but just look out for its constant or not
