Honestly it has to do with your flow. If you’re bleeding more you want a bigger size or you’ll leak. If you’re bleeding less and you use one that’s too big it’ll hurt to put in and remove because it’ll be like weird and dry. And normally you’ll need at least two sizes throughout your period to address the difference on different days. 
When I used tampons I used either tampax pearl because it felt way better than the cardboard kind, or the Kotex active (for the same reasons) but I switched to Flex discs and I think theyre wayyyy better than a tampon. 12 hour wear time (so less waste) it’s helped with my period cramps,
