Nipples burn and bruise while breastfeeding before/during menstruation?

I am breastfeeding and have gotten my period once since I had my baby early November. I remember before I got my period (and before I knew I was going to start menstruation) that my breasts were extra sensitive, and I got concerned my baby was having latching issues again (it was a serious struggle after she was born). I feel like I am due to get my period again because it has been almost a month since my last one, but my nipples have hurt SO BADLY the past week. They are raw, burning, and look discolored like they're bruised whenever I breastfeed. Did anyone else go through this? Is this normal?
