Stuck on 1 or 2 syllables?

Question

Our LO mastered the "ba" and "ma" sounds like 9 months ago but they are all he says. Ball. Bubbles. Mama. No "da"...calls his Dad "baba" should we be concerned about speech development?

My girl still isn’t saying many words. Mostly just gestures, sounds and grunts. She says Mama rarely, Da and sometimes dada, she attempts to say please and kitty, she says ba for bath and buh for brush like brushing teeth. My doctor told me not to worry about it yet but it’s hard not to stress a little.

Nope. Every kid is different. My nephew was jabbering up a storm when he was super young but he was with my parents, me sister, me, and my aunts all the time. He would come hang out with a variety of people throughout his week depending who was doing what and if my sister needed help. Because he had a lot of different interactions he picked up on different things from different people. He was the only kid in the family too so he was constantly surrounded by adults. Our friends kid who is the same age took a long time to start expanding his vocabulary. I honestly thought he may of had an issue when I met him because I was comparing the 2 boys. He just just fine and moved at his own speed. He's now a 5 year old that is super smart and won't shut up according to his parents. He was an only child but he wasn't around loud mouth italians all the time like my nephew. His parents and even grandparents are a little more quiet so it made sense. They also talked for him quite a bit. We would ask my nephew to repeat us or even tell us what something was called. Our friends didn't do that a ton. You could try doing that with your son if you're up for it and want to see if he's up for learning but again he'll get there eventually.

We can relate to the one syllable usage! My little guy leaves the first letter off of words. He says “an” for van, fan, and pan. He’ll say “ot” for hot. He says nana for banana. I’m trying to teach him the beginning of these words but he hasn’t caught on yet. I plan to ask the doc at his next appt but trying not to worry for now! I think it just takes time.

I wouldn’t be too worried just yet! Toddlers do things at their own pace most of the time and still learning. If his vocab doesn’t expand by 18 months then I’d def ask his dr.
