My son will be 2 in May, and bedtime has been hell lately. Most of the time I can hold him and cuddle to sleep, but other times he throws a fit because he doesn’t want to go to bed. It’s not because he’s not tired. But we’ve been having a hard time getting him to bed in general, so we’re trying to get him to go to sleep by himself. He’s not in pain or anything, but he SCREAMS. He gets himself so worked up that he ends up having dry sobs after he goes to sleep. I would go in there and snuggle him to sleep if he was actually really upset, but he’s not sad, he’s just unbelievably pissed off. He screams like he’s involved in an exorcism, deep in his throat. It’s not a sad or in pain cry.
What do I do about this?? It breaks my heart that he’s crying like that, but I know if I give in, he’s going to know that if he cries long enough or throws a big enough fit, we’ll give in. I go in there and give him hugs or a drink if he needs it, so I don’t just let him sit in there and scream. I just don’t know how to make this easier, or if we’re just being terrible parents 😭 But right now we’re at a point where I know he can go to sleep by himself because he’s done it multiple times before , he just doesn’t want to.
