Should your partner treat your son differently to a child you have together?

They aren’t obligated to treat you child the same. In a perfect world it would be like that but it’s not reality. I don’t treat my stepkids like I treat my son. They have a mother. I’m more like the extra support so it works for us.

Yes he should. Coming from a blended family my mom treats my sisters no different than she treats me. You’re supposed to treat and love them the same whether it’s his bio kid or not

Family dynamics matter here.  For instance, if your son has an active father in his life, it is not unreasonable for your partner to play more of a supportive role with your son.  And considering the child you have together only has two parents, it is not unreasonable for those roles to look slightly different. 
There are many happy blended families that function according to their family dynamics rather than societal expectations. Sometimes being a support person is the best way to show up for a step child.  Sometimes it's not.  Dynamics matter. 
Now if your partner is treating your son poorly or hostile...that's a completely different scenario and should absolutely be addressed!

It would be a deal breaker for me if my husband treated my first differently than our kids together. She doesn’t have a father figure outside of him though, so he is her only dad and he’s known her since she was a baby and always treated her like his own. One of the many reasons I fell for him. After we had kids together, it didn’t change how he treated her at all. But even if her bio dad was present, I would still expect him to give the same love and respect equally. I’ve had many step parents growing up and there’s nothing worse than feeling like the left out mistake because your step parent treats the other kids better and doesn’t acknowledge you as part of the family.

Should they treat one child differently? No. 
But unfortunately it happens depending how old the child was when they met and the relationship with bio dad (step dad and son). It’s not right, but it happens and it’s too bad.

My husband treats my daughter like his own. He’s known her since before she was 2 and she’s 7 now..her bio dad is a twatwaffle and completely unreliable for her though..so while he’s still around my husband definitely takes on the dad role for her

I have a blended family. I have two, my husband has two, and we have one on the way. It’s easy to say “treat the child like you’re own” but not every dynamic is the same. I don’t see his kids that often, especially the oldest. We don’t see much of him at all. The 10 year old stays every other weekend,  but there’s still no real connection between us since we don’t see each other often. When she is here, we talk, play games, etc but I don’t chime in in places that would require “parenting” as we both feel it’s not my place. Don’t get me wrong, I still tell her to tidy up here and there and if she’s picking on my little one then I’ll address the whole room about being fair and nice to each other. I don’t single her out or make her feel any less than, but I’m also not blind and know that it’s a different relationship. She goes to her mom and dad for bigger issues but she knows that I’m also here if she needs me. 
I’m not going to sit here and pretend that just because I’m her stepmom that I’m supposed to go above and beyond because it’s just not like that. There’s a very distinct difference in my parenting and theirs and I’m okay with that.. I feel I only step in when it’s something that also affects my children (bad habits). Of course I want the best for her and I do give my husband advice on certain issues behind closed doors but I never step on his toes or anything. I’m not going to say I automatically “love” his kids just because we got married, because then I would just be fake. I care for them and will look out for them like mine, but they also don’t need me to pretend to be their mom.

A good healthy difference! They are extremely close, my son from before and my husband. My husband is unbelievably kind and loving and took them in as his own—-however, of course he treats them different. The leaves room for my son and daughter, teenagers now, too have their biological dad, and feel that respect from my husband that he loves them deeply but he will never try to replace.￼
