What is the point of having a baby registry if NO ONE is going to purchase things off it for a baby shower?

I dont make registries for other people. I make them for myself to keep track of what we buy for the baby, to price compare, and to get the coupons at the end. I figure that the people that want to buy us the most useful things will ask for exactly what we need and get us what we tell them (usually if they ask we give them a few different options at a few different price points). Other than that i personally always shop off of other peoples registries because i know how annoying it can get to get stuff you dont need or dont want

One thing that does happen is people will look at the registry, then they will go into the store and buy the gift, but they don't think to tell the store that this is an item on a specific registry that now needs to be checked off. Or they order it but not realize that they should have ordered it through the registry. So don't be surprised if you get some of the things on your registry, but they still aren't marked off

Most of my friends and family are moms or new grandmas. Every single person actually bought from my registry!

I never had a baby shower for any of my pregnancies. I just bought everything I needed myself.

You don't need to have a shower for ppl to buy off of your registry. 
Friends and family have asked if I'm having a baby shower, and I've told them that due to covid, we've created a registry but won't be having a party until after he's born when covid settles down a bit and it gets warm enough for everyone to hang out outside.
We've had our friends and family gladly buy off of the registry...besides, I'd never have a party just to get gifts. I find that tacky.
Anything that's left on the registry, we're using the completion discount to purchase.

I'm okay with that. You can't tell people what gifts to buy you. 
They use it as a gauge for what I will need, then pick up similar things in their budget. Or most of them just get what they can.
