First time taking the pill

So I am 21 and I’ve never taken birth control before. I decided to get on the pill but the dr and the pharmacist told me two different times to actually start taking it. The dr said to start taking it on the first day of my period (which is in 6 days), while the pharmacist said to take it once my period is over. Not sure when to start taking it.
