Wisdom tooth question

I’m having a wisdom tooth removed next week, not being put to sleep for it though. For years (I’m 32 now!) about once a month or every other month for a few days, I have such pain because of it. There is like a skin flap over it that kiiiills me. What is this and when the tooth is extracted will it go away?!
