Transitioning to toddler bed tips?

Tips for transitioning our daughter to a toddler bed? We are going to use her crib for baby #2 due in May.

With my first I put the sheets for his new bed under my own blankets for a whole day so they smelled like me. He had no problem with the transition. This one we skipped the crib.

For my son, I would let him play in his room solo (while I watched on baby monitor) before we officially switched his crib to the bed. It let him get used to being alone in there with his toys and let us know if there were any danger zones to amend before setting him free. 
He had no problems switching over to his bed.

We are due with baby number 3 in May also !  My daughter (May’19 baby) still loves her crib, which we will need for the new baby too. 
I’m figuring the new baby will sleep with me in my room for a few months so it can buy her some more time in the crib.
