Happy Black History Month

Day 13: Having a proper education is not a privilege it's a right. Every human being has the right to own their own mind and fill it with knowledge. However that right was only allowed to white men and white women. Black people were slaves and were not allowed to receive education.  Soon things started to change, and women started going to universities however they were not allowed to receive their degree. The first black woman to go to a 4 year university and receive a degree is Lucy Sessions. Ms. Sessions went to Oberlin college in 1846 and got a degree for a “ladies literary course” in 1850. The degree Lucy Sessions received was not the same as the degree men at the time received (Bachelor degree). However, she still deserves credit for breaking a barrier that white men put up to keep African Americans from succeeding, Lucy Sessions was the first black woman to go to a four year college and receive a degree. Years later, Mary Jane Patternson was the first black woman to graduate with a B.A degree in 1862. Mary Jane Patternson was a child born into slavery and she also went to Oberlin College since it was the first co ed university in 1837. Mary Jane Patternson studied Greek, Latin and mathematics. She graduated in 1862 with a Bachelor’s degree and soon began teaching. From 1871 to 1874 she was the first black principal at Preparatory High School for Colored Youth, later known as Dunbar High School. So for today we are honoring Lucy Sessions and Mary Jane Patternson for dominating in a “white men field”, we are honoring them for not taking shit from white people who tried to hold them back, and we are honoring them for inspiring other black students so Ms. Sessions and Ms. Patterson, thank you for showing black students that education is possible
