Can you educate me on taxes?

Question

The people filing taxes now in 2021 are they filing taxes from last year 2020? 
How does the stimulus check factor in? 
Those that received checks for dependents 2021 when doing this years taxes do the people who claimed the dependent(under18) 2020 do they have to claim the child 2021 because of the stimulus check? 
What are the basics of taxes when do people do there 2021 taxes any financial advice

yes. it's always a year behind bc it wouldn't make sense to show proof of income if you haven't finished the calendar year yet. it can be a little confusing tbh. 
bf is getting his stimulus checks for this year's return bc they were using 2019 returns before in which he was a dependent, but in the calendar year 2020 he became independent. you only need to claim a dependent if you provide for more than 50% of their financial support. 
there's a lot of information involving taxes and involves your assets, income, your filing status, etc. in general, turbotax or hiring a cpa involves the least amount of headache. the former is good if you don't have very sophisticated/complicated forms to deal with.

You claim dependents from 2020 when u are doing your 2020 taxes. Don’t revolve stuff around the stimulus check, it was based off 2019 taxes. Just file your taxes with relevant info from the year 2020.
