How to discipline 2 year old with a speech delay?

Advice on how to discipline my 2 year old son that has a speech delay? He won’t let me acknowledge his feelings he just cries when I try talking to him and I don’t want to hug him to calm him down because I feel like that’s rewarding his behavior.

Hugging is not a reward. Calming a child down and talking to them about their behavior is important. He can understand a lot of what you say even if he isn’t talking

Hugging to calm down isn’t rewarding behavior. Toddlers have a lot of emotions and don’t have the ability to reason or express how they are feeling. Hug and then talk it out when he is calm enough to reason.

i don’t have any experience with speech delay, however i don’t think it should or would have any effect on the way you discipline him. he may not be able to fully communicate back the way another 2 year old might (i’m not sure) but he should surely understand. especially right from wrong!

A two year old doesn’t understand his feelings. If he’s throwing a fit he most likely doesn’t even understand why he’s so upset. In that instance I’d get low on the ground and tell him you’re there for him and ask him if he wants a hug. At that point you just need to be supportive and give him a safe place.
I kind of get the vibe that’s what you mean but I’m sorry if that’s not your situation and I just gave you unwanted advice! Toddlers are HARD! Good luck mama.

My son has a speech delay. He is 3.5yo now & just starting sentences. It has never changed the way I’ve disciplined because it is not a cognitive delay, he understands everything (trust me the kid is so friggen smart, he outsmarts me all the time lmao), just speech has taken a bit longer. 
First figure out what’s going on. Did he straight up do something he shouldn’t have or is he having a tantrum. If it’s a tantrum is it from not getting his way or because he’s frustrated due to not being able to communicate. That was one of our biggest issues. 
I usually remove him from the situation. If I try to talk to him & he screams over me or pushes away from me I put him in his room & say, I’ll be back in a couple mins, it’s time to calm down. Then I come back he usually comes in for a hug & we talk about it. 
He he’s touching things he shouldn’t or whatever throwing things etc. I take it away. Simple. If he freaks out I try to explain why, which usually is enough to stop the tantrum, if not we do what I said in the paragraph above. 
We at first had trouble understanding why he’d have so many tantrums. Then it finally clicked, how hard would it be to need to say something or try to tell them why you feel this way & understand what’s happening, but not be able to tell you. I’d get so upset. That perspective helped me A LOT in disciplining. I’ve always been pretty stern & strict, but it just made me think about how I worded things & making sure he is looking at me so he can watch what I’m saying.

I feel the same about hugging. Depending on the situation... if she’s being ridiculous and throwing a fit because she didn’t get what she wants she goes in timeout and calms herself down. After she’s calm we hug and talk about the situation and how it was not ok.
