Missed period but Brown spotting ?

My cycle is now 8 days late. Today is CD 42 and I have brown spotting.. took a test today and it was BFN. I had very light, pale pink spotting on CD 36 & CD 38. Any ideas of what might be happening? I want to believe it’s implantation because I do tend to ovulate pretty late.
