Question

My son says mama and dada, mainly dada. No other words. He babbles and points, shakes his head yes or no. He understands when we talk to him really well. His dr didn’t seem too concerned at his 18 month check up but he still hasn’t made any advancements. Should I call his dr again, or just give him more time?

I would say contact early intervention or a speech therapist to see what they say. Many doctors are waiting until 2 years to make a referral, but really the children can be working on their speech at this time! (I'm a pediatric OT and find this "wait until 2" to be very frustrating at times).

I’m in the exact same boat. My little guys doctor didn’t seem concerned either at the 18 month appointment but everyone else is saying their babies are talking lots and saying so many words. My little one is just so active and it’s like he’s not interested in talking he just babbles and makes noises when he wants something. All he says is mum and dada and points sometimes. Hopefully they start talking soon!! I might try to refer him to a speech therapist just to see if he needs any help or even just to get an assessment.

Nope, my daughter who just turned 19 months today is still speaking the bare minimum. Like I can see her trying to say words, like repeat after me, but nothing really. I guess I maybe understand what she’s trying to say only because she mimics me. I thought I had read that it may become a concern at 24 months? But don’t quote me. Because I have heard of people going to see someone about speech when their kid was 18 months and getting advanced help. I know my mom did that with me only because her mom kind of put it in her mind saying that I was deaf or something. Turns out I could hear perfectly fine and I was just choosy on what/when I wanted to talk. After I started talking, my mom said I wouldn’t shut up lol

My son only says "uh oh, no, & dada". His doctor sent me to a specialist at his 18 month appt. He's seeing the specialist April 6th, doctor said it's best to tackle it early on.

My 18 month old isn’t speaking. He’s been in early intervention since 15 months old and is meeting with a a developmental pediatrician next month. (This appointment took six months to get!)
