What do you know about the roll of melatonin in labor?
So I recently heard (from an OB) that the reason labor more often starts at night is believed to be because of how melatonin works with oxytocin in the body to progress contractions. I’ve been trying to find & read more about this... while I’m finding quite a few studies on the topic overall, I’m having a hard time finding more info on the specifics I’m looking for.
My Dr. had recommended melatonin at the beginning of pregnancy to help with insomnia I was/am dealing with. I’m not taking it every night, but am about twice a week/as needed. I had the thought (before I heard the above info) that as I approached labor, I could make sure I was getting good sleep & maybe even help me rest through some very early labor by taking one. My last pregnancy labor started right as I was getting ready for bed & lasted 30 hours, at the 24 hour mark (when I decided to get an epidural) I had already been awake close to 40 hours. So I’ve been 🤞 that labor would start earlier in the day this time around. Now I’m wondering if taking a melatonin late in pregnancy at bedtime could actually do the opposite and kick off or intensify early labor.
I plan on talking to my Dr about it at my next apt, but If anyone has any good resources or seen studies about this, I’d love to see them. I’m kind of a nerd when it comes to this stuff 🙃.
