When to go to L&D

Just curious as to when to go into L&D to get checked.. I’ve been cramping for a couple days now and today has been the worst day of cramping along with lower back pain/pressure. It feels like I’m on my period with just constant uncomfortable pains.. I don’t wanna go and waste anyone’s times or be sent home. Just wondering when everyone else went in.

For me when the contractions are regular and intense enough that I can’t walk or talk through them and have to focus and breathe. My first I went as soon as my water broke and was there 18 hours which was misery. They don’t let you eat or drink during that time and I would’ve been so much more comfortable at home. With my second I stayed home until I thought I was prob around 6-7cm. I chilled in the bath tub, ate and drank to my hearts content and it was great. Got to the hospital and was 7-8cm and delivered 1.5 hours later. Way better experience so I prefer to wait until things are well established.

When the cramps come in waves that are in a pattern. (Every 5-3 minutes, last for a minutes, for at least one hour). 
If the cramping comes and goes but never increases in frequency or disappear all together occasionally it’s not time yet.

UPDATE: I ended up going in and she was born @ 5:03am on the 23rd 
Start to finish was 12 hours! 
No epidural only Iv Pain meds

4-1-1 contractions 4 minutes apart that last 1 minute and a consistent pattern for an hour
Or if your water breaks and it smells foul or isn’t clear
